RAWRA plans geological work at 6 sites

Press release

Issued by the Radioactive Waste Repository Authority

Prague, 25.4.2003

The Radioactive Waste Repository Authority (RAWRA), the state organisation responsible for radioactive waste disposal in the Czech Republic, has completed the screening stage of the siting process for a deep geological repository. The whole of the Czech Republic has been evaluated employing a complex set of criteria based on both geological and legal requirements. The siting process will continue with the taking of geological measurements at 6 of the recommended sites: Lubenec-Blatno (Usti region), Budisov (Vysocina region), Pacejov (Plzen region), Rohozná (Vysocina), Pluhuv Zdar-Lodherov (South Bohemia region) a Bozejovice-Vlksice (South Bohemia region).

Geological work at the selected sites will proceed in conjunction with the results of an evaluation of the whole of the CR based on the archive data.  Its purpose was to identify those sites which meet the specified requirements for a deep geological repository and concerning which no conflicts with applied criteria currently exist which might rule out the construction or operation of such a facility.  11 sites have been considered in all (7 in granite, 3 in metamorphic and 1 in sedimentary rock formations.).

The process continued with the classification of these sites according to further criteria e.g. information on landscape character (forests, agricultural land, urbanised areas) or conditions for the construction or operation of a deep geological repository (transport options, constructional and operational economics).

Accordingly the 6 relatively more suitable sites mentioned above have been selected. Five other sites – Borohradek (Pardubice region), Tepla (Karlovy Vary region), Zbytiny (South Bohemia region), Opatovice-Silvanka (Central Bohemia region) a Lodin-Novy Bydzov (Hradec Kralove region) will continue to be held in reserve as potential sites, however, they will be considered only if further surveys reveal the six currently proposed sites to be unsuitable.

The first stage of geological work will consist of aerial geophysical measurement aimed at obtaining more precise information on the geological characteristics of these sites. This measurement process should be completed within the next 2.5 years, commencing in the second half of this year. This will then be followed by surface geophysical measurement, later supplemented by bore hole drilling.

The selection of a site for a deep geological repository is a requirement of the Concept of radioactive waste and nuclear fuel management which has been approved by the Czech government.  RAWRA is the state organisation responsible for meeting this task and is very well aware that the deep geological repository siting process may affect life in those areas directly involved, hence it aims for continuous dialogue with the municipalities concerned. All interested parties will have free access to information and will be invited to participate in special meetings to be held on completion of each geological survey stage.
